Catching a Cultural Wave (Just Don't Try to Define It)
By CHRIS DIXON

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif.
The New York Times: Sunday, July 28, 2002

For the surfers, the iconic image was a pop-art silkscreened poster by
John Van Hamersveld, of a surfer facing a bright sunset. The poster, a
promotion for the Bruce Brown film "The Endless Summer," which was
a hit with surfersand landlubbers, became an enduring image.

January 1964, John Van Hamersveld, then a famous surfer known as the
“Hammer”, is riding one of the first Makaha Skateboards out front of Surfer
Magazine. Later that year John designed the iconic film poster for
The Endless Summer.

In 1964,from Santa Monica came the Makaha Skateboard that changed the
Surf Culture. This design, a true product of the Southern California lifestyle,
was the first commercially produced skateboard. Invented by Larry
Stevenson, an L.A. lifeguard, the idea was soon copied by a number
of manufacturers and it wasn't long before the skateboard craze swept
across the USA and around the world.
